Graham Knuttel

Graham Knuttel, born on March 10, 1954, in Dublin, Ireland, grew up in a household steeped in artistic sensibility, shaped by his English parents who had settled in Ireland in 1947. From an early age, he demonstrated a deep affinity for visual expression, which led him to study at the Dún Laoghaire School of Art.

There, he developed a strong foundation in figurative painting and sculpture, absorbing the lessons of modernist masters whose innovations in form and emotional intensity would later inform his own artistic language.

Knuttel’s career unfolded against a backdrop of cultural transformation, beginning with his receipt of the Royal Canada Trust Award for Young Sculptors in 1976—an early recognition of his sculptural ingenuity. In the 1980s, he co-founded the Wicklow Fine Art Press, contributing to the infrastructure of Ireland’s contemporary art scene. By 2008, his stature was affirmed nationally when An Post issued two postage stamps bearing his designs to mark the Summer Olympics.

His work attracted international collectors, including Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, and entered major corporate holdings such as Swiss Bank Corporation and Goldman Sachs International. Knuttel passed away on May 27, 2023, leaving behind a body of work that bridges personal vision and social observation.

Knuttel’s approach to form and narrative was shaped by the expressive power of Van Gogh, the structural rigor of Cézanne, and the radical reimagining of the figure in Picasso’s oeuvre. These artists inspired his exploration of emotional depth through distortion, color, and composition, guiding his evolution from sculptural experimentation to painterly storytelling.

Throughout the hotel, you’ll find a collection of his works. Take some time during your stay to enjoy the artwork on display and experience a unique element of Irish creativity up close!
